Where can an exhibition happen? Guide to galleries...

Exhibitions can happen in different spaces. Most of the time people host exhibitions in galleries. Each gallery has a different model for determining it’s exhibition program. Below are the three primary ways emerging artists can access a space to host their exhibition.

Some quick advice for emerging artists, designers and curators at UNSW Art, Design and Architecture:
  • The best space for you to put on your first exhibition is one of the spaces operated by Arc Creative that serves the UNSW student community. These spaces are Kudos (that’s us!) or AD Space.
  • Kudos and AD Space are student galleries that know they are working with emerging artists who may still be learning the ropes.
  • These spaces are completely cost free-- all you have to do is submit a proposal (which is free to do!). Often if your exhibition doesn’t get selected for an exhibition program, we keep your name and practice in mind for other opportunities.

1.   Galleries that accept proposals for exhibitions
  • Some galleries accept proposals for exhibitions from emerging artists, designers and curators.
  • Often there will be no out-of-pocket expenses for you to use the space if your proposal is accepted. This makes getting an exhibition slot at one of these galleries more competitive.
  • Your proposal will be reviewed by a board of directors who will decide what the gallery’s exhibition program will look like for the year and whether your proposed exhibition alligns with that vision.
  • Depending on the space, you may be paid for you involvement the exhibition as an artist or curator.
  • Kudos, AD Space, Pari, First Draft, Tiles and Goodspace Gallery for example.

2. Galleries for hire
  • This is a gallery that you pay to use for an exhibition.
  • This cost can be anywhere between $500 - $2000 for a week.
  • Oftentimes the idea is that you will pay the gallery and then sell your art during the course of the exhibition to cover the cost of rent.
  • Much less competitive to use one of these spaces for an exhibition.
  • Luna Studio, Comber Street Studios, Flow Studios, M2 Gallery, Tap Gallery and Studio 551 for example.

3. DIY
  • Repurpose a space to put on an exhibition
  • Living rooms, abandoned buildings, public spaces, rivers, alleyways-- there are infinite possibilities!
  • Ritual Transmission Agency, GUZZLER, Layton Street and no.23 for example.
