a how-to guide on arts finances

How much should you charge for your work? What can you claim on tax? And what in the world is an ABN?

This is the panel that answers it.

For many artists, the financial side of creative practice can feel opaque, intimidating, or something you're expected to figure out as you go. Yet, understanding artist fees, pricing, invoices, contracts and tax is essential to building a sustainable practice.

Join NAVA's Donnalyn Xu and arts accountant and valuer Michael Fox for a practical discussion on navigating the financial realities of life as an artist. From pricing work and understanding industry standards, to tax obligations and record keeping, this session will unpack some of the questions artists most commonly encounter when starting out.

Whether you're preparing for your first exhibition, freelancing, applying for callouts, or simply trying to make sense of the administrative side of creative practice, this conversation is designed to help demystify the process.

Donnalyn Xu is NAVA’s Membership and Projects Officer and NSW Professional Development Coordinator. In these roles, she provides consultation and advice on the arts sector, drawing on the Code of Practice. She also produces and delivers tailored and industry-specific workshops. Outside of NAVA, she is a Casual Academic in Art History at the University of Sydney and a freelance writer.

Michael Fox is the Principal of Michael Fox Arts Accountant & Valuer and the Director of Fox Galleries.
